TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Land Mobile Radio (DMR, TETRA, P25)

Land Mobile Radio is a professional radio communication system used by security teams, public safety agencies, utilities, logistics operators, industrial teams and field personnel. DMR means Digital Mobile Radio, TETRA means Terrestrial Trunked Radio, and P25 means Project 25, a radio standard widely associated with public safety communications.

Why organizations still choose radio over mobile phones

Radio does three things a phone network does not. It works when the mobile network is congested or down, which is precisely when coordination matters most. It reaches a whole team with one press rather than a call at a time. And the coverage belongs to the organization rather than to an operator, so it can be engineered for the site rather than accepted as found.

Choosing between DMR, TETRA and P25

  • DMR: the most widely deployed digital standard in commercial and industrial use. Efficient, well supported and cost-effective for most security, logistics, utility and site operations.
  • TETRA: designed for mission-critical use with strong support for large user groups, fast call setup and high availability. Common in public safety, transport and large infrastructure.
  • P25: the standard most associated with public safety in North America and with agencies requiring interoperability to that specification.

The right answer depends on user numbers, coverage area, interoperability obligations and what the organization already owns. We will say when a simpler system is sufficient.

What BCE Systems provides

Coverage planning and system design, licensing support with the relevant regulator, supply of radios and infrastructure, repeater and site engineering, fleet programming, installation and commissioning, user training, warranty and RMA handling, and ongoing maintenance. As a Motorola Solutions Silver Reseller we supply, configure and support the MOTOTRBO and DIMETRA ranges.

Frequently asked

Do we need a licence to operate two-way radios?
In most cases yes. Frequency use is regulated, and in Kenya that is administered by the Communications Authority. We support the licensing process as part of the project, and we will not supply equipment where the necessary authorisations are not in place.
How much coverage will we get?
That is a design question, not a product question. Terrain, building construction, distance and antenna placement matter more than the radio model. Coverage is planned, and where the requirement is critical, surveyed.
Can new radios work with a system we already have?
Frequently, yes, depending on the standard and configuration in use. We assess the installed system before recommending replacement, because extending is often cheaper than replacing.
